'No Changes Needed': Cancer Survivor Shines as MVP in Adapted Athletics Tournament

On Saturday, the Alabama Women's Wheelchair Basketball team secured their fifth successive national championship, with Bailey Moody once again playing on the court for the fifth year in a row.

Moody mentioned that she has been playing basketball throughout her whole life.

"She mentioned that it has pretty much always been her top passion. She was quite the tomboy who adored sports; she dabbled in almost every activity but consistently returned to playing basketball," she explained.

At the age of 10, Moody received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, an uncommon type of bone cancer. This condition necessitated the removal of her leg and put at risk her capacity to engage in the game she adores.

"It was quite heartbreaking because my entire query revolved around whether I would ever have the chance to play basketball again?" Moody stated.

Yet, everything transformed once she set her wheels on the court.

In short, after I sat in a chair, I developed an affection for it and rediscovered my passion for the sport," Moody stated. "Since then, I've never looked back. Things have really picked up from that point onwards.

She is correct. She has become a five-time national champion and was named MVP in the latest championship. Throughout this period, she also represented Team USA at the Paralympics, securing silver and bronze medals. None of these achievements would have been achievable without losing her leg, as Moody pointed out.

She stated that she wouldn’t alter anything since it has brought her to her current situation, and being this fortunate now makes her unable to envision skipping those experiences or wondering about where she might be without them.

She mentioned as well that her journey isn't over. Moody plans to continue playing for the Crimson Tide for another year prior to earning her master's degree in counseling.
