A new $37 million health care education center has been established Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) is revolutionizing the future of medical education in Southeast Texas.
This year, the advanced Workforce and Allied Health Training Center commenced operations with classes, targeting the area’s persistent nurse deficit.
The 51,000-square-foot facility accommodates crucial departments including nursing, phlebotomy, and pharmacy technology. As per LIT President Sid Valentine, this investment marks a significant advancement for both the institution and the nearby healthcare network.
"The structure we are currently in was a $37 million endeavor. Every element within this building was crafted for deep immersion," Valentine explained.
Construction began at this site in April 2023, and today it stands as the new hub for engaging, practical education. A standout feature is the sophisticated nursing skills laboratory equipped with realistic patient simulators for student training.
Our mannequins have the ability to speak, cough, and even perspire; we can also take their pulse," explained nursing student Nyaah Guillory, LVN. "It allows us to provide assistance as though they were real patients.
Guillory highlighted the advantage of getting trained locally, underscoring the significance of catering to the needs of the Golden Triangle region.
"I have no urge to leave this place. I've experimented withHouston, but that’s not where I see myself. My preference is to stay right here at home," she stated.
LIT has introduced a new Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program, according to Valentine, who states this is the sole ADN program offered in the area.
When our students complete their program over two years, they can start practicing right away," he stated. "We aim to tackle the persistent nursing shortage, particularly within our local area. Additionally, we’ve observed a perfect pass rate for certain examinations.
Valentine thinks that the new center will swiftly influence local hospitals by providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge for success.
When they depart from here, someone is funding their employment," he stated. "With this facility available, we gain the chance to achieve that… individuals can approach us, receive top-notch education, and promptly make a difference in our medical facilities.
The initial group of students from the new program will likely graduate in spring 2026.
