MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A third-grade student from Grahamwood Elementary School has tested positive for pertussis, commonly referred to as whooping cough.
The Memphis-Shelby County Schools notified parents and guardians of the diagnosis via an email on Friday.
The MSCS reports they are collaborating closely with the Shelby County Health Department to assist in managing the circumstances.
The classrooms potentially affected by contact have all undergone sanitization. Moreover, extra nursing personnel has been provided, and Interim Superintendent Dr. Roderick Richmond toured the school premises on Friday.
Symptoms of whooping cough include a persistent cough, runny nose, mild fever, red or watery eyes and vomiting.
Cases of whooping cough nationwide reached their peak within the last ten years. with over 32,000 cases documented in 2024 .
