Bald and Bold: Four Launch Cancer Fundraiser in a Show of Support

The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) has initiated GoBald 2025, their yearly campaign aimed at raising awareness and funds for children and families fighting against childhood cancer.

This year, SCCS plans to collect RM1mil and cut off 400 heads of hair.

The earliest ones to lose their hair during the launch event were Awang Naim Awang Bahrin, who has a child with cancer, and cancer survivor Nur Haiqal.

Following them was Wilfred Jameson, a grieving father, along with Kelvin Wan Kwong Wei, who supported the SCCS.

For Awang and Wan, this marked their inaugural participation in the campaign.

The theme for GoBald 2025 is “Leave Your Mark” and funds raised will help ensure children with cancer receive critical medical aid, improved care and access to essential support services throughout their treatment.

"When you decide to shave your head, you're showing support for kids who lose their hair due to treatments, conveying that being bald is beautiful," stated SCCS president Mary Kiu Ai Ling.

SCCS requires RM2 million annually for its operations, with more than 70 percent of these funds going directly towards aiding children battling cancer via medical scholarships, monetary assistance, and specialized therapies.

Ever since its founding in 2001, it has assisted more than 1,700 households.

Each year, SCCS documents approximately 50 to 70 new instances of pediatric cancers in Sarawak.

Participants in GoBald have the option to either raise funds exclusively, opt for shaving their heads, or go for both activities.

SCCS requires a minimum sponsorship amount of RM50 for a sponsored head shave.
