Watch: Spectacular Smoke Plumes Erupt Over Christchurch in Industrial Blaze

The major blaze at an industrial site in Christchurch has now been brought under control and hasn’t extended past the structure where it originated.

Fire and Emergency received notification about the fire in the Bromley district just before 1pm today and discovered the structure completely ablaze upon arrival.

Plumes of thick dark smoke were visible billowing from the industrial area across large parts of the city.

Fire and Emergency deputy commander Dave Key stated that eight units, including two elevated platforms, continued their efforts to put out the blaze.

Key stated that the initial team to reach the blaze managed to stop it from expanding further.

The initial response teams did a good job containing the blaze within the structure’s center to prevent it from reaching Maces Road. However, as the fire remains active, our focus now is on extinguishing it completely and halting further spread. Once those tasks are under control, we will be able to work more closely with the residents and determine the exact point of ignition.

People living nearby should shut their doors and windows.

Key urged people living close to the fire zone who have elderly neighbors nearby to reach out and make sure these seniors also keep their windows and doors shut.
